So if you’re tank just has a lot of surface rust, which most do. I’m sure that 4 or 5 gallons of white distilled Vinegar can come to the rescue for you and your pocket. And it only take A day or two for the rust to separate from the tank.

Rust Removal From A Motorcycle Gas Tank Using Electrolysis
A simple Electrolysis set up using a PC power supply as the power source, a wire hanger as the sacrificial anode and a mixture of water and Sodium Carbonate also known as Washing Soda/Laundry Soda. You can make your own Sodium Carbonate by heating up baking soda in the oven for an hour or so, above 300 degree Fahrenheit (149 degree Celsius). I read that some people are you using oxyclean since the active ingredient is Sodium Carbonate. The solution in the tank is a mixture of 5 gallon of water and 1/2 cup of Sodium Carbonate. I topped the tank off, put in the sacrificial anode, connect power to the anode, ground wire to the tank and turn on the power. You should start to see bubbles if it is working right. Make sure not to let the anode touch the gas tank. Also make sure you do this in a well ventilated location because the reaction will release Hydrogen gas and any spark might cause an explosion. I let it do its thing for about 20 hours and after checking the tank looked like it did a really good job. It looked liked all the rust was gone but I decided to do again just incase i missed anything.

After the acid wash and water rinse, we poured Part “B” of the Kreem Kit in the tank. It removes the moisture and dissolves any minor contaminants left over from the water rinse. This is basically acetone and it will mix with the tank liner if there is any left behind. I would do this twice if I had it to do over again, this tank is really bad…

How to clean a Ninja 250 motorcycle gas tank with Vinegar. Part 3
I’m showing you the inside of gas tank. Before you pour the Vinegar remove your petcock off of the tank. The petcock is normally held by 2 bolts and pulls straight out. Make sure you seal the holes from the petcock with duct tape. After that pour the vinegar up to the brim of the tank and close it. Then all you need to do is wait. Obviously if you have a thick rusted tank I would wait probably 48 to 72 hours.
