Advise on building a custom chopper?
i dont have much expierence, but im a very quick learner. if i were to get a frame made by daytec or rolling thunder, and pick the drive train out from some where like S&S, would it be too much to handel. would i just be better off buying a harley and modifying it with an AME chopper rake kit and wide tire kit and swaping out the motor for an S&S or modifiy the fatory drive train ?
I will have to agree with a little of what everyone said. Having built my bike and several others I can tell you straight up that it isn’t always as easy as it looks. There are alot of hours designing, cutting fitting redesigning and fitting to get the just right look. some of the first things that you need to know is exactly what you want you or your customers bike is going to look like before you even start spending money.. If you are building this for yourself, i would suggest getting a custom kit from some of the very reputable custom builders that are out there and start there. They have taken alot of the guess work out of how thing fit together, from power plant to transmission alignment issues. you also need to figure your rake degrees, what type of front suspension and rear your going to run. then you get into electronic as in where you want to route them to not be seen for that crisp clean look. figure your rear and front tire sizes, going 160,180,200 etc…. then once you get some of all that figured you have all the rest of your sheet metal to figure, how tight do you want the engine to set in it. if you can tell on my pic, i have very little clearance between tank and engine. I myself love the s&s power plants and put them in everything that i build along with baker transmissions. Oh yes don’t forget primary drive prices as well…then the paint…. As you can see there is alot of thinking and planing that goes into building a bike. My 49cc Bike motor kits, Huffy Cruiser and Mountain Bike/ Massachusetts Registration $40
I built three of these bikes. One is in RI being used as transportation to work by my son. I really enjoy building these bikes! If you live in the Worcester County area and would like this type of bike i can build it with modified tension arm for about $100 (you supply motor and bike, motor kits about $140.00 shipped). If your bike frame needs modification a bit more. WARNING: MASSACHETTS – REQUIR REGERSTRATIONS FOR THESE KITS $40 FOR 2 YEARS. you will need your local police do a serial # search on your motor and sign a waver for registry if none exist (pain in the but worth it). all three of my engine kits had NO serial #s.
I purchased the engines (that runs awesome) for $139 each total with shipping. The Huffy Cruiser was $79 at walmart total build about $230. The schwinn was off craigslist for $35 used total cost of build about $175. My opinion is if you want something for short trips to the store or work there great, Keep your speeds down about 20 / 25 mph.
